Are we in the End Times?

QUESTION

ANSWER

Many people wonder whether the world is now in the “end times.” The Bible speaks of a period leading up to the return of Christ, and Scripture gives clear signs that will characterize that season. While the Bible teaches that no one knows the exact day or hour (Matthew 24:36), it does give indicators that help believers understand the general time period. Jesus described certain conditions that would intensify as the end approaches: wars and rumours of wars, nations rising against nations, famines, earthquakes, and increased lawlessness (Matthew 24:6–12). These events have occurred throughout history, but Jesus called them “the beginning of birth pains,” meaning they would increase in frequency and intensity as His return draws nearer. The Bible also speaks of a widespread turning away from truth. Paul wrote that in the last days people “will not endure sound doctrine” and will turn to teachings that suit their desires (2 Timothy 4:3–4). He also warned that difficult times will come as society grows increasingly self-centred and ungodly (2 Timothy 3:1–5). Another sign connected to the end times is the spreading of the gospel. Jesus said, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world… and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). The continued global spread of the message of Christ reminds believers that God is still calling people to repentance before judgment comes. The Bible does speak about “signs,” but it also gives an important warning: believers are not commanded to calculate dates or predict specific timelines. Jesus taught clearly that “it is not for you to know the times or seasons” that God has set (Acts 1:7). Scripture does not call Christians to watch calendars, but to watch their hearts. We are instructed to be spiritually awake, not date-watchers. The emphasis of the New Testament is readiness, not prediction. Jesus said, “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him” (Matthew 24:44). For this reason, Christians are not told to focus on days, months, or years, nor to follow those who claim special insight into prophetic dates. Instead, believers are called to live daily in holiness and obedience, to walk as Christ walked (1 John 2:6), and to live as ambassadors for His kingdom (2 Corinthians 5:20). A pure life, a ready heart, and a faithful witness are the marks of true preparedness. Scripture emphasizes ongoing faithfulness rather than end-time speculation. Whether or not we are in the final stage of the end times, the message remains the same: Christ will return, God’s promises will be fulfilled, and those who trust in Him should live each day with expectation, purity, and devotion.
